Jonathan LeVine Gallery is presenting new works by artists Aakash Nihalani, Jason DeCaires Taylor, Olek and WK at SCOPE-Miami Contemporary Art Fair, from November 29-December 4, 2011, during Art Basel Miami Beach. Placing a focus on public art for this program, the gallery will present a series of works that highlight a diverse range of distinct styles, cultural perspectives and unconventional mediums. Each of the four artists selected represent fresh directions in creating work in public space through their innovative vision and inventive use of materials. Photography documenting their interventional imagery, sculpture, and performances convey the transformative effect their work has on its surrounding environment.

3-6PM - Thank You for Your Visit, Have a Nice Day, 3 hour action created originally for Art in Odd Places:Sign, A festival exploring the odd, ordinary, and ingenious in the spectacle of daily life.
This piece performed 4 times in October by 13 performers outfitted in crocheted wearable sculptures was inspired by a man who wears a uniform and holds a signHold the Handrailin the Taipei, Taiwan metro station. One might laugh, obey, or not. I found the simplicity of the sign interesting, the context both odd and symbolic. How often do we see signs? Do they influence our behavior?...or do we mimic social protocol, sort of follow the herd. This placing of signs intended to open a visual dialogue; a study that attempts to mirror public behavior.

I had a very successful solo show at Christopher Henry Gallery that introduced my work to an even bigger audience and brought me tons of press! I was lucky to start the year with a residency at AAI-LES and finish it with another one at Workspace, LMCC.
It was truly a year of guerrilla actions that opened a new path in my crocheted investigations.
I started it with a bike and ended up with the Charging Bull as a Christmas gift to NYC and a tribute to the sculptor of the bull, Arturo di Modica, who in another guerrilla act, placed the bull on Wall Street in Christmas of 1987 as a symbol of the strength and power of the American people
following the 1987 Stock Market crash.
This crocheted cover represents my best wishes to all of us. It will be a great, prosperous year with many wonderful surprises!!!

100% Acrylic 11.07.09(after Jan van Eyck), Soho 20 Gallery, NYC
I think crochet, the way I create it, is a metaphor for the complexity and interconnectedness of our body and its systems and psychology. The connections are stronger as one fabric as opposed to separate strands, but, if you cut one, the whole thing will fall apart.
Relationships are complex and greatly vary situation to situation. They are developmental journeys of growth, and transformation. Time passes, great distances are surpassed and the fabric which individuals are composed of compiles and unravels simultaneously.
100% Acrylic 11.07.09
(after van Eyck)
presents a journey. . .an unscripted path which two entities, encased by suits of crocheted armor, will travel through Chelsea. With each step taken, the armor will unravel - exposing a new layer to the entity; the history of this shed coat still connected, dragging behind.
I can't really speak to what will be revealed-to know that, you have to find the end of the loosened yarn and follow the performers - live individuals from Jan van Eyck's painting - to their final destination, Soho 20 Gallery.
